Adulting: Expectation vs Reality

Adult

[uh-dult, ad-uhlt]   (verb)

  1. The act of doing things you hate because you have to
  2. Pretending to be older than you really are
  3. Putting on pants

Examples of ‘adult’ used in a sentence:

“Ugh, I had to adult today and it was awful.”
“I can’t believe they want me to adult. I mean, who do they think I am?! I’m only 21!”
“I’m so bad at adulting. I don’t know why I’m allowed out of the house.”

Expectation: You’ll get a great job that pays well
Reality: I have two jobs and an occasional shadowing, all of which I am lucky enough to love with a burning passion, but it’s a lot. Most of my dialogue consists of
“What are you doing tomorrow?”
“Work.”
“The next day?”
“Lol. Work.”
“And I’m guessing-”
“Work.”

Expectation: College is a giant party
Reality: Some days it is, but most of it consists of more hours spent in the library than at home. I’m on a first name basis with some of the librarians. We’re pretty tight.

Expectation: You’ll stop spilling things and looking dumb
Reality: Oh that’s a nice white dress you have on. It would be a shame if you stained it…

Expectation: You’ll have wonderful and healthy adult relationships
Reality: Hahahaahaha

Expectation: You’ll stop worrying about money because you’re an adult and are responsible
Reality: No matter how responsible you are, when the loans come knocking, the tears like to answer.

Expectation: You’ll eat healthy because you now know how to cook
Reality: I am an expert in the art of making cereal. It’s a craft- really.

Expectation: You will adult
Reality: You will try to scrape by with minimum adulting because it’s HARD. I’ll be right back, I need to call my mom.
