Bus Drivers, Time Travel and America

June 12th was tragically overcast topped with a depressing drizzle in Bournemouth. It not only worsened my already sour mood, but destroyed any hope for somewhat presentable hair. After all, nothing says “I’m back in America” like a classic Megan afro.

I watched everyone trudge onto the bus to the airport after giving heartfelt goodbyes to their loved ones that they were leaving behind. Even I found myself struggling not to cry at leaving my adoptive country and my friends behind.

The engine started and the intercom crackled through the silence as the bus driver began to give a cheerful speech on time that could not have been more random or contrasting to the day,
"Time is not constant. It is always changing and we actually gain 26 seconds in a day without a leap year. Sometimes the earth wobbles on its axis and it messes up our time. Eventually we could have a 25 hour day!"

His “fact of the day” lasted for about ten minutes as fellow grumpy passengers looked around surprised and rather confused as to why this particular coach ride wasn’t stifled in bad weather, bad moods, and a stale quietness like they usually are. They were probably mourning the Megan fro too.

The bus driver changed my day of 12 miserable hours of traveling that put miles between me and the people I love, and reminded me that there is some good in everything...even long, dry coach rides. By the time he had finished, the bus erupted into applause, laughter, and smiles. I'm serious. Actual applause.

It is the people we least expect that can make the biggest difference in the smallest way. Whatever it is you do, whether you work an office job, are an intern, a barista, or a parent, be exceptional at what you love...you never know how it can change the world. Oh, and don’t forget to bring a hair tie along. You just never know.
