Relationships: Where You Went Wrong

Sometimes we just don’t know when to stop. Sometimes we lose sight of our worth. Sometimes we just use others to fill gaps in our life, romantic and platonic relationships alike. Just like the Netflix error sign, “Whoops, something went wrong…”, here are the lessons that I have learned after some earth shatteringly awful experiences with relationships.

Lesson 1:
Nobody can give you something that you cannot first give yourself. I don’t mean physical things...like coffee. If someone gives that to you, take it and cherish them forever. I mean things like happiness, confidence, or even (if not especially) love.

Lesson 2:
If someone is the source of your unhappiness, chances are that you should not hang around them. The point of a relationship is for two people to bring out the best qualities in each other- like pairing chocolate with strawberries if you will.

Lesson 3:
Don’t take crap. Generally this is my rule of thumb for all things in life, unless you are working, in which case, just smile while silently seething. But if someone spends their time making you feel awful, you should probably throw something at them then leave. Don’t actually throw something though...lawsuits are expensive. Mentally throw something.

Lesson 4:
Purge. Don’t throw up because there is no way I’m going to clean it up.
We just need to remember that it’s okay to let the people in our life go that don’t add worth or positivity, no matter our history or lingering emotional attachment. It’s like a overgrown tree, it needs to be pruned to stay alive...andddd I just compared you to a tree. Sorry.

Overall, your happiness comes first and if someone is hurting you either intentionally or unintentionally, let them go. Sometimes you are just better off alone, but when you find the right people, they will make you shine from the inside out.
