Inspired by the media posted online during Cinco de Mayo, I started thinking about what does and does not belong on the internet for the world to see.
DO’s
- Post things you are proud of. Maybe you finished a marathon or passed that class you were worried about, share it with your family and friends… I’ll like it for you!
- Post pictures of your pets….I love puppies… just saying.
- Post and repost yummy recipes or cool things you find while trolling around on the internet. What else am I supposed to do while waiting at the doctor’s office?
DON’T
- Post alcohol excessively. Posting/snapping about having a drink or two with friends or your first legal drink on your birthday is so so different than your weekly keg stand and literally pouring it all over people.
- Post pictures of people on the toilet. Have some common decency because that isn’t how I wanted to start my morning and it’s rather uncomfortable for everyone. It happens often.
As wonderful of a tool as social media is, it can also destroy lives very very very very quickly. I can’t stress that enough in case you haven’t noticed. Very. Very. Very.
Once you put something out there, it’s online forever and unlike what snapchat makes it seem like, it lasts a whole lot longer than five seconds as advertised. The last thing you want is to become the meme of the day. Wouldn’t your mother be proud?
Own Your Brand
You are your own brand and what you post on social media represents you. So unless you want to be known for last Thursday’s snap story of alcohol dribbling down your chin, it’s a good idea to start posting the things that would make you (and your parents and even future children) proud. Have your drinks and have your fun, just think twice before posting it for everyone else too.
